NEJM -- Toxic Leukoencephalopathy
نویسنده
چکیده
PubMed Citation Leukoencephalopathy is a structural alteration of cerebral white matter in which myelin suffers the most damage. Toxic leukoencephalopathy may be caused by exposure to a wide variety of agents, including cranial irradiation, therapeutic agents, drugs of abuse, and environmental toxins.1 Toxic leukoencephalopathy particularly involves white-matter tracts devoted to higher cerebral function, causing clinical features that range from inattention, forgetfulness, and changes in personality to dementia, coma, and death. This review focuses on white-matter damage caused by toxins as distinguished from that caused by disorders such as multiple sclerosis, cerebrovascular disease, and metabolic disturbances.2

Toxins in Brain! Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging of Toxic Leukoencephalopathy – A Pictorial Essay
Toxic leukoencephalopathy results from damage to the white matter caused by various toxins. It manifests itself as white matter signal abnormalities with or without the presence of restricted diffusion. These changes are often reversible if the insulting agent is removed early, with the exception of posthypoxic leukoencephalopathy that can manifest itself 1-2 weeks after the initial insult. How...
متن کاملStroke-Like Presentation of Toxic Leukoencephalopathy as the Initial Manifestation of HIV Infection
The toxic leukoencephalopathy syndrome is increasingly recognized, but rarely presents as an acute cerebrovascular syndrome. We report a 23-year-old man with sudden onset of a right hemispheric sensorimotor syndrome and final diagnosis of HIV-induced toxic leukoencephalopathy.
متن کاملGliomatosis cerebri mimicking chemotherapy-induced leukoencephalopathy in a patient with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Patients with hematological malignancies may develop white matter lesions, which are usually associated with chemotherapy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice for identifying chemotherapy-induced, or "toxic", leukoencephalopathy. Brain biopsy in patients with hematological malignancies suspected of sustaining toxic leukoencephalopathy has rarely been performed, be...
متن کاملMethadone-induced toxic leukoencephalopathy: MR imaging and MR proton spectroscopy findings.
We report the clinical, MR imaging, and proton MR spectroscopy findings in a middle-aged woman with proved methadone-induced toxic leukoencephalopathy. The imaging characteristics of this unusual condition have been reported only rarely in the medical literature. We show that the imaging findings in methadone-induced toxic leukoencephalopathy are similar, though not identical, to previously rep...
متن کاملAcute fatal posthypoxic leukoencephalopathy following benzodiazepine overdose: a case report and review of the literature
BACKGROUND Among the rare neurological complications of substances of abuse is the selective cerebral white matter injury (leukoencephalopathy). Of which, the syndrome of delayed post hypoxic encephalopathy (DPHL) that follows an acute drug overdose, in addition to "chasing the dragon" toxicity which results from chronic heroin vapor inhalation remain the most commonly described syndromes of to...
